Black Belt Academy, trading as ILDOKWAN, is an authentic Taekwondo school in Bristol offering traditional Korean martial arts training rooted in Chung Do Kwan, one of the founding disciplines established in 1944. The academy serves men, women and children of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners seeking competitive excellence or practical self-defence skills.
Led by Chief Instructor Andy Davies, a 9th Dan Grand Master and nine-time British Champion, the school distinguishes itself through its direct lineage to Grand Master Kim Bok-man, a technical founder of modern Taekwondo. Unlike sport-focused academies, Black Belt Academy emphasises practical, combat-ready martial arts with real-world application. As the only officially approved Practical Taekwondo Academy in the region, the school prioritises functional self-defence techniques developed through military experience and authentic Korean traditions.
The academy maintains direct certification and communication links with the World Taekwondo Chung Do Kwan Federation in Korea, ensuring their teaching methodology reflects the highest international standards. With a philosophy centred on family values and unity—reflected in their name meaning "School of Unity"—the academy creates a cohesive training environment focused on empowering both mind and body.
